Drywall & Wall Calculators
Calculate drywall sheets, joint compound, and wall material needs.
Drywall installation is one of the most common home improvement projects, whether you're finishing a basement, renovating a room, or repairing damage. Accurate material calculations prevent project delays and unnecessary trips to the store. Standard drywall sheets come in 4x8 and 4x12 foot sizes, with 4x8 being most common for residential work. Our calculators determine how many sheets you need based on your wall area, factoring in waste for cutting around doors, windows, and corners. Beyond drywall sheets, you'll need joint compound (mud), tape, screws, and corner beads. Our estimates include these materials to give you a complete shopping list. We also account for the typical 10-15% waste factor that occurs when cutting sheets to fit your specific layout.

Frequently Asked Questions
What thickness of drywall should I use?
Standard walls use 1/2 inch drywall. Ceilings may use 5/8 inch for better sag resistance. Fire-rated areas like garage walls require 5/8 inch Type X drywall.
How many screws per sheet of drywall?
Plan for about 32 screws per 4x8 sheet when installed on studs 16 inches on center. Screws should be placed every 8 inches along edges and 12 inches in the field.
Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 sheets?
Use 4x8 sheets for easier handling in tight spaces. Use 4x12 sheets in open areas to reduce the number of seams. Fewer seams means less taping and a smoother finish.
